my planet

I played around with the planet software and found it quite interesting and usefull. Long time ago, back in the uni day, I tried to find a simple RSS reader that I can used to gather all my favourites blogs and websites in one place. It ends up to hacking a piece of python code I found on the net but still not fit to my requirements. Planet is a python code that read all the RSS/Atom feeds and dump it in a nice looking HTML pages, just what I want. Since it output an HTML pages, you can put it on your web server, and coupled with some cron job you can get it updated every moments you want it. Look's like some trend changing in me ... with the Gmail, I started to like mailing-list rather than a forum board. Now with planet, I started to like RSS feed. Unfortunately, some websites which I read occasionally such as malaysia-today does not have RSS feed.

In case you're interested in what I'm reading currently, you can look at my planet.

How to get the free ISO ?

Another news, MenuOS 0.76 has been released. This one has DHCP client so I guess it would have a better Ethernet support. The last time I try, it still can't support my Ethernet card. Running directly from the floppy, it's really impressive how they can fit in that so small storage.
MenuetOS is a fully 32 bit assembly written graphical hobby operating system, distributed under GPL license. Menuet supports 32 bit x86 assembly programming as a faster and smaller system footprint.

Menuet has no unix roots and the basic system is meant to be a clean asm based structure. Menuet isn't based in any particular operating system, since the idea has been to remove the extra layers between different parts of software, which complicate programming and create bugs.

GNU Screen

Now I'v found a complement to my favourite window manager - Evilwm + GNU Screen.
Screen is a full-screen window manager that multiplexes a physical terminal between several processes, typically interactive shells. Each virtual terminal provides the functions of the DEC VT100 terminal and, in addition, several control functions from the ANSI X3.64 (ISO 6429) and ISO 2022 standards (e.g., insert/delete line and support for multiple character sets). There is a scrollback history buffer for each virtual terminal and a copy-and-paste mechanism that allows the user to move text regions between windows. When screen is called, it creates a single window with a shell in it (or the specified command) and then gets out of your way so that you can use the program as you normally would. Then, at any time, you can create new (full-screen) windows with other programs in them (including more shells), kill the current window, view a list of the active windows, turn output logging on and off, copy text between windows, view the scrollback history, switch between windows, etc. All windows run their programs completely independent of each other. Programs continue to run when their window is currently not visible and even when the whole screen session is detached from the users terminal. - GNU Screen
Previously, I used to open a lot of terminal for the shell command, system monitor, chatting, playing mp3/video etc. Using screen, I would minimize the number of terminal by running screen inside my terminal and let it manages all the console windows. Using screen is as simple as a few keystrokes - ctrl a c (new window), ctrl a n (cycle window), ctrl a W (window list) etc. The true power of Screen is its ability to detach and reattach from the terminal. 'Detaching' let the shell running at the background while 'reattaching' let you continue from where you'd left it out, given a session ability. To add some fancy thing to Screen, we can have status bar that display the list of windows, current time/date, hostname etc- mimicking the Windows taskbar. Thanks to root@ittutor.net for the tips.

notes

While reading through the blogs at petalingstreet.org, I found someone blogging about the post-it notes software, kind of electronic version of post-it notes. Since I\'ve yet to get my Zire71 working on FreeBSD, I\'m also thinking of an electronic reminder on my pc. Then an idea came to my mind. Why not just used the simple unix command such as \'tail\' to do this simple job. I have transparent eterm sitting on my desktop, ready for command. So, to have reminder on my desktop I would just run these two simple command:
$ echo \'CEB4134 class at 10.30\' >> notes.txt [repeat this for every new event]
$ tail -f ~/notes.txt
Now I have reminder sitting on the desktop and is updated every time I put new note in the notes.txt file. Simple and nice. It\'s lack the alarm to notify for the event but paper notes also don\'t have alarm ..isn\'t it ? Maybe I could use my cron to play some sound ...

kazaa will be shutdown ..?

Sharman Networks, the owner of Kazaa peer-to-peer network claims that the raid to its office last week was not legal. The search warrant, an Anton Pillar order, which granted the Music Industry Piracy Investigations, MIPI the right to conduct the search was not granted based on all the facts, Sharman says.

An Anton Pillar order is used in software piracy cases, and gives the right to conduct a raid without prior notice to the suspect. According to Sharman the judge who gave the order was not presented with all the relevant facts to the case and therefore the order should be set aside.

Sharman\'s complaint will be heard on February 20. Until then MIPI cannot access the seized documents, the company says. - [http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/4964.cfm]

related story:
The anti-piracy subsdiary of Australian Recording Industry Association, called Music Industry Piracy Investigations (MIPI), has raided several companies and universities in Australia, trying to find documents that would prove that they have violated Australia\'s copyright laws.

Raid were launched after Australian court granted MIPI a search warrant, so-called Anton Pillar order, that allows copyright owners to search premises to find evidence of alleged copyright violations. Raid targeted Sharman Networks (the owner of Kazaa), Telstra (Australia\'s largest ISP) and several major universities. - [http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/4948.cfm]

I\'m not using kazaa for quite a long time, not sure how the services now but it looks like that they are into every possible targets. However, this is Internet. You shutdown one networks, other networks start blooming on instantly. :)

46 Best-ever Freeware utilities

http://www.techsupportalert.com/best_free_utilities.htm
There are a lot of great freeware programs out there. Many are as good or even better than their commercial alternatives.

This is my personal selection of the best of the best. I use every single product in this list and find each to be a gem. Of course other folks may differ but, hey, this is MY selection ;>)I\'ve downloaded and install AVG Antivirus. It\'s a nice tool and it\'s free. Once I restarted my PC after the installation, AVG immediately detected a virus on my system. The virus is a trojan horse, what ? So someone has messing around my pc .. lucky that it has not been boot up for quite a long time. AVG is light on resources and the download size is only 5MB+. Better check it out.

just another phone

SGH-E700A dijangka kuasai pasaran telefon bimbit

the price tag is RM1999 ...phew ..is anyone would spent the money for just a phone ..? yes it also has the \'stupid\' digital camera, MMS, Java and all the crappy things but do we really need these thing ? What I want for my phone is just ..yes a phone. e-mail and Internet access also sounds great like this

some quote from the site:How fast is i-mode?
I-mode phones transmit data at a speed of 9600 bps. Although this sounds slow compared to ordinary 56kps computer modems, it is actually quite satisfactory for i-mode, since each email is limited to only 500 bytes and most i-modes sites are relatively lightweight (i.e., made up mostly of text data with very few graphics, averaging about 1.2K in size). Downloading email and i-mode pages usually takes only a few seconds. And remember, the cost of downloading is calculated according to the amount actually downloaded, not the connection time - so a slow connection would not make your transaction break your bank. Our telcos are busy promoting for their GPRS and 3G but I\'m not expecting too much. They\'re just playing with words without any intention to actually build the things up.

open source in schools

via nstAbu Talib said based on information gathered from the profiling, the Government, through relevant Ministries and agencies, could then develop a comprehensive plan to outline the implementation of open source in schools. The plan, he added, should also take into consideration feedback from other parties from the industry and academia.

He said a successful implementation of open source in schools will provide an alternative technology for education, improve total cost of ownership of operating ICT in schools, and create new opportunities for the knowledge-based economy.

In addition to the development of a roadmap to introduce and implement open source software (OSS) in schools, the Government will need to take into account feedback during the implementation from teachers and students, said the Malaysian National Computer Confederation (MNCC).yes ..I think they really should. Student should be told more than just a micro$oft syllabus....
