swik

Found swik, I don’t know how to really describe it. It’s a wiki, no. It’s a blog, not really but you can have a page act like a blog. Maybe it is an RSS aggregator since you can just enter the feed url, suddenly the page became an RSS aggregator. I thought I fell in love. It’s a love on first sight. For my blog, I want something like swik.

microsoft to go open source ?

Read on osnews that Microsoft is preparing to release part of their code, certainly the 'none-core' code.
A member of Microsoft's Shared Source Initiative has told ComputerWire open source code is "coming". Stephen Walli, platform's business development manager, added Microsoft would likely release "non core" code - i.e. code that is not a part of the operating system. - http://www.cbronline.com/currentnews/7503585eb6e9543f80256e670038578b

open source in schools

via nstAbu Talib said based on information gathered from the profiling, the Government, through relevant Ministries and agencies, could then develop a comprehensive plan to outline the implementation of open source in schools. The plan, he added, should also take into consideration feedback from other parties from the industry and academia.

He said a successful implementation of open source in schools will provide an alternative technology for education, improve total cost of ownership of operating ICT in schools, and create new opportunities for the knowledge-based economy.

In addition to the development of a roadmap to introduce and implement open source software (OSS) in schools, the Government will need to take into account feedback during the implementation from teachers and students, said the Malaysian National Computer Confederation (MNCC).yes ..I think they really should. Student should be told more than just a micro$oft syllabus....

my new weblog

alhamdullillah, two days spent working on this new weblog and the gallery seems to be paid off. I\'ve got the gallery up yesterday night and finished preparing this new weblog today. It\'s a hard decision wether to upgrade my existing system or just use any of the existing open source weblog engines available on the net. What I need is just an admin interface so that I can easily make a post directly from this blog. Then I try make a search on sourceforge and found a list of blog engines written in php. After a few testing on the engines, I found this one b2 looks fit to my requirements. The admin interface is simple enough and the more important is the underlying code structure that makes me feel I\'ve found what I want. The structure it used in some part reflecting my old weblog so hacking and moving around the code is not really hard. So, why not I\'m giving it a try ...? :-)

FOSCON 2003

It seems that Free & Open Source Software Conference 2003 (FOSCON) will be a gathering of a local and foreign open source advocate. The familiar name such as Dinesh Nair and Dr. Nah will not be missed in this event. Dinesh will be presenting a topic on BSD: Other Family of Operating System which I think would be worth of listening, considering his experience level with the OS. Another open source gurus such as David Axmark of MySQL AB and John 'Maddog' of Linux International will also be there. It's an event that would be interesting enough to me but unfortunately I've to give it a miss. For a full details, visit http://opensource.mimos.my/fosscon2003/?main=main

A Guide to embrace open source

Before I get started, what is Open Source is all about ? Open Source website has a good exlanation on this and I'll not repeat it here. There are also a few posted on Smach 98 Forum about open source.

Switching to open source is not a one day task. It needs understanding at the first place before going down to make your hand dirty. Open Source website, again is a good place to get started. Reading through the magazines and local newspapers also will give you some idea what is open source. The Star InTech (Tuesday & Thursday) and NST Computimes (Monday & Thursday) is my favourites. I'm myself take quite some times to really embrace. Most of the early days are about reading and surfing the WWW for information regarding open source.....The next step is to decide what open source's application that we would like to adopt. There are large number of application ranging from operating system, programming language to the critical business and scientific application. Operating System is really a good start as it would be the heart of our machines. Among the popular OS is Linux (of course...), FreeBSD, NetBSD etc.

Once you've decided what to take on, it's time to make your hands dirty. Study your application thoroughly and make sure at least you know what it does even you're not using it yet. Again, the WWW is the best place to go. Drop at google for example and a simple keyword likes 'linux tutorial' will give you thousands of result and I bet that what are you looking for is on the first or second page. Forum websites also a good place for help but please try on your own first before asking helps. It's just a manner. Don't teach ourselves to always depend on others. Be independent. However if you're facing any problem, the good guys there is always willing to help you.

I'm not going into details on how to install open source application as this is only a general guides on how to embrace open source. Maybe next times I'll provide more specific tutorial on how to install linux (I'm a linux user ..) or anything else.
